Girls Missing After Texas Flood Surges 26 Feet In 45 Minutes
Timelapse footage reveals the devastating flash flood in Kerr County, Texas, which caused at least 51 deaths and left several girls missing from Camp Mystic, a summer camp near Kerrville. On July 4th, as the nation celebrated Independence Day, the Guadalupe River surged rapidly, flooding the area within minutes.
About 750 girls were at Camp Mystic, and rescuers are searching for up to 20 children who are unaccounted for. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said the missing children might not be lost but out of communication, while some families, including the mother of nine-year-old Janie Hunt, have sadly confirmed deaths.
Kerrville Police promised ongoing rescue efforts, supported by hundreds of responders statewide. A viral timelapse video shows how quickly the floodwaters turned a clear road into a dangerous torrent in just seven minutes.
Residents expressed shock on social media, questioning why warnings were insufficient despite National Weather Service alerts. Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of emergency and requested federal assistance.
Kerr County officials said the flooding was unexpected. City Manager Dalton Rice explained that excessive rain overwhelmed the two forks of the Guadalupe River, causing water levels to rise from 7 to 29 feet in minutes, leading to the rapid flood.
